I’ve been making music as vaxxers for a long time now, probably close to five or six years i think. I didn’t look it up. When i first started it was an exercise in any music that wasn’t immediately recognizable as “singer songwriter”, a means to attempt genre exercises in a low stakes fashion, as well as using these opportunities to get more acquainted with my own instruments in ways i usually couldn’t with folk and traditional song structures.

For a while the act of performing a vaxxers set varied between improvised guitar and drumming by joe westerlund in front of kenneth anger films, plugging an aux jack into my laptop and playing the pre-recorded music, or just noise sets created by looping youtube clips of movies i liked. For Hopscotch 2021 I was asked to perform a vaxxers set for a day party and i had recently purchased a casiotone ct310 from a thrift store. I put the deadline on myself to figure something out with this thing by the time the show came around. I started experimenting with creating huge, spacey drones with a ditto looper pedal and added distortion and reverb plugins in garageband. After the hopscotch show and a few others i was ready to figure out how this would sound as a record.

During this time i was listening to a lot of sparks and japanese ambient/city pop, particularly green by hiroshi yoshimura, a favorite of keyboard heads for a Reason. The final album doesn’t necessarily capture the frenzied playing and slapping that happens during a casio vaxxers set, but it does, i think, highlight the sound of discovering new ways around old moods in a way that i haven’t felt in my music for a long time.

When my CD copy arrived in the mail I was actually already listening to the digital version for maybe the 3rd time. The whole thing is just so beautiful and triumphant sounding the entire way through. It has the exact energy I need right now in my life.
