I had the humblebrag-worthy privilege of hearing the latest Hiss Golden Messenger album, Jump For Joy, a couple of months before it was announced. It's one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands. It's an album that, like many of their best albums, grows deeper and stranger the more you sit with it, the more you analyze and listen intently, and intensely. As a studio band Hiss has only improved with age, and lyrically these are some of Mike Taylor's strongest and strangest songs, hitting you with immediate empathy and a rueful wit.
My favorite song off the album is "Feeling Eternal", a song that feels straight out of True Stories-era Talking Heads. It hits harder and rocks louder than most all over Hiss songs, bursting with nervous energy, my favorite kind.
I reached out to Mike for the lyrics, wanting to put my own spin on the song for fun and for a sort of "thanks" to him and the band for making something wonderful. After Mike and the others in the band reached out to offer their praise for my version I decided to officially mix/master and release it properly.
The b-side is a cover of "Desperados Under The Eaves", written by Warren Zevon. It's the final track on his second self-titled album. It bleeds a sort of woozy bitterness, an unease hiding behind hiccuping piano and drums and Western Movie Score strings. It's the musical equivalent of Van Gogh's Night Cafe, a portrait of comfort painted with blood.
These songs don't really belong together, but emotionally I think putting them together at the end of this year feels appropriate. The dizzying highs and the nervous lows. Emotionally, musically, tonally, these are the two moods I'd like long time and brand new listeners to keep in mind for my 2024. EGG awaits.
Thank you.

When my CD copy arrived in the mail I was actually already listening to the digital version for maybe the 3rd time. The whole thing is just so beautiful and triumphant sounding the entire way through. It has the exact energy I need right now in my life. I'll have to add a favorite track later, its so hard to choose. Thank you Al for the music. janieryan
